Chinese automotive giant BYD has moved from bold presentations to real-world execution. The company has officially begun large-scale deployment of its megawatt-class EV charging stations across China. According to local media reports and widely shared images, the new “flash charging” units are already appearing in multiple regions nationwide.

The stations are easy to identify thanks to their distinctive T-shaped overhead structure, with charging cables suspended from above rather than resting on the ground. The design is more than aesthetic — at extreme power levels, cable management, durability, and user safety become critical engineering factors.

Up to 1360 kW — Beyond Conventional Fast Charging

The new infrastructure is built around BYD’s Super e-Platform, an architecture engineered to handle ultra-high voltage and current. Chinese publications cite peak charging power of up to 1360 kW — far exceeding the output of most existing public DC fast chargers.

A headline performance metric being circulated is “2 km per second,” which translates to roughly 400 km (about 250 miles) of driving range in just five minutes under ideal conditions. While real-world results will depend on temperature, battery chemistry, and vehicle compatibility, the figures suggest charging speeds that begin to rival the convenience of refueling a combustion-engine vehicle.

Liquid Cooling and Energy Buffering

At the core of the system is advanced liquid cooling. Both the charging cables and the station’s power modules are designed to maintain stable performance under extremely high loads, preventing overheating during sustained ultra-fast charging sessions.

Additionally, the stations reportedly incorporate energy buffering systems. In practice, this means the charging unit can store energy in advance and then deliver it at peak output when a vehicle plugs in. This approach reduces strain on the local power grid while enabling consistently high charging performance.

A Strategic Shift for the EV Market

If the claimed specifications hold up in widespread use, megawatt charging could move from concept-stage technology to real, scalable infrastructure.

With this rollout, BYD is not just showcasing technical capability — it is attempting to redefine charging standards at a national level. And in the broader EV landscape, infrastructure breakthroughs often matter more than incremental horsepower gains or cosmetic redesigns.

China continues to push forward with vertically integrated electrification, from battery production to public charging networks. Megawatt charging may prove to be the decisive step that removes one of the last psychological barriers to EV adoption: charging time.
