Moldova May Suspend Registration of Vehicles With Technical Defects

18 May 2026

Moldova may introduce a new mechanism allowing the temporary suspension of vehicle registrations if a car fails to meet technical standards or poses a threat to road safety.

According to a draft law developed by the Public Services Agency, the use of such vehicles on public roads would be temporarily prohibited until the defects are repaired or the mandatory technical inspection is completed.

At the same time, the vehicle registration itself would not be permanently canceled, meaning owners would not need to re-register their cars after resolving the issues. Information about the suspension would be automatically added to the State Vehicle Register and shared between authorities through electronic information systems.

Drivers would be given 30 calendar days to pass a technical inspection or fix the identified problems. Once the inspection certificate is issued, the registration suspension would be lifted automatically.

The bill also proposes amendments to the Contravention Code. Driving a vehicle with suspended registration could result in fines and, in certain cases, temporary confiscation of license plates.

The initiative will be submitted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova to the government and later to parliament for approval. The proposed changes are part of Moldova’s efforts to align national legislation with European Union standards.
